Thank you AS ALWAYS for putting to words EXACTLY how I feel about something! And something I feel so strongly about, as someone who is about to turn 38 and has a face full of lines and age spots and does NOT want to feel like I need to "do" something about it.

"when we over-emphasize the morality of individual choices and insist that critics be quiet to protect feelings, we miss an opportunity to denounce a predatory industry, explore the anxieties that power their profits, and acknowledge those who model divestment"

I think it is so obviously ridiculous when people - especially women - come running to the defense of their choice to get botox, plastic surgery, whatever. It's like, yeah - we know society's beauty standards are nuts! We know the pressure is real and hard to escape to varying degrees. We know it feels so bad. We do all know this! So just accept the choice you've made! You don't have to defend it! We can critique the practice itself and no one's coming to tar and feather you personally!

I feel this way about SO many things. Like yes, we all agree there's no ethical consumption under capitalism, we're all victims of the patriarchy, individual choices won't solve systemic problems. Yes! We agree! So then you truly don't need to defend the structures that are leading you into the individual choices we all agree are not ideal!

I think factory farming is top of the list for one of the cruelest, most horrendous systems in this country - truly predicated on suffering and destruction of all kinds - and yet almost everyone I know eats meat, including my husband, and barely anyone EVER mentions factory farming as a societal shame. I think all my meat eating friends and loved ones are wrong to participate in this system, because I think the system is wrong. But they're doing it, and I get it, and I don't think I'm better than them that I don't. I just think the system is wrong! Be okay with acknowledging that you're doing something wrong!

You don't need to defend something bad because YOU personally participate in it! I buy stuff off amazon. I think amazon is so bad. So I'm not out there defending amazon!

I think so much of this is people being online too much...thinking every opinion has to be shouted from the rooftops, every personal stance made clear. It's such an over-fixation on oneself, while honestly lacking in self-awareness. I wish everyone would get offline! Go make your choices and acknowledge where they stem from and if you think you're being judged by strangers commenting on articles on the internet - get offline!!

Finally—thoughtful, clear writing on this topic. You’ve articulated so much of what I’ve been feeling about media's promotion of something so undermining to all our psyches. As a 63-year-old woman with two daughters in their 30's, I’ve carried a lot of anger about plastic surgery, and your piece helped me better understand where that comes from.
