I'm doing a low spend year so my list is not as exciting as previous years but:

1. Baby blue cowboy hat ashtray I bought for my partner that she uses as a jewelry holder, but would be amazing for a preroll imo (similar) https://www.garmentory.com/sale/degoey-planet/decor-objects/1658369-jolie-laide-x-degoey-planet-howdy-cowboy-hat-delphite-blue?gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPTgjvzkYufdbgc9bDKpmQYHdBExwHyMbg9TXJ0NhjaiJiYw0vt_5boaAm6_EALw_wcB

2. bright red leuchtturm journal - the dotted pages are great and I love love the paper. Went to others and came back to this one. https://www.leuchtturm1917.us/notebook-classic.html

3. a file organizer for my stasher/reusable kitchen bags - I got this one from target but I have a feeling there are way better ones. it helps to keep them contained and easy to sort through. This was a huge pain! Now it is not! https://www.target.com/p/mesh-letter-sorter-black-brightroom-8482/-/A-83901217#lnk=sametab

4. Ticket to Jaqueline Novak's one woman show Get On Your Knees - incredible!!! stuff.

5. Marshmallow roasting forks from Goodwill similar to these. Already used them 3 times this summer and nothing is quite like molten toasted marshmallow https://www.acehardware.com/departments/outdoor-living/sporting-goods/camping-goods/6220016?store=14405&gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSIH6fVZ_uc95BRZXBCRpNZYdPcN9tRDOPoglKpzxbaufzAkeWaCbQaArIzEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

1. Buckwheat pillow: I have two cylindrical ones and they're amazing and I'm considering a regular rectangular one too for variety

1.5 The pillow combined with daily 10 minute stretches (by looking up neck and shoulder stretches Youtube and Tiktok) has kept headaches and neck pain at bay for a while

2. Hair towel wrap: I have the eco-friendly one from Kitsch. But I've heard great things about the Crown Affair one

3. Ojook toothpaste: the bamboo salt and hydroxyapatite sell intrigued me in addition to being an overall "clean" product, and it seems to work really well! Bonus points for aesthetics. It's $18, I don't buy makeup or drink alcohol so I'd like to think of it as a reasonable trade

4. An electric toothbrush: Must be vibrational and not rotational

5. P2 Probiotic Power Mouthwash: I can never remember the exact name of this little company, A little goes a long way and it really does seem like it satisfyingly removes biofilm. They have other products too.

6. Chef'n Pro Series Kitchen Brushed Stainless Steel Solid Turner: The best spatula I've ever used. Doesn't melt, handle doesn't get hot, thin and sturdy to slide under everything including like floppy eggs and pancakes

7. Cast Iron pans and pots: They just do everything, they're not fussy at all if you have the right tools like the spatula above and...

8. Chainmail dish "cloths": perfect for cast iron and everything else

9. Xylitol nasal spray: perfect for prevention and treatment of seasonal allergies and colds

10. Tallow cream: There's sooo many great companies. I use it as lip balm and body cream. It keeps my eczema well under control. *knock on wood*

11. Herbal and green teas: Another sign of feeling adult (even though I'm also like well into adulthood lol) it's the simple things you know. Flavored water without the risk of diabetes or cavities

12. A metal tongue scraper: I'm envious of people who feel like they genuinely don't need one

13. HOCl spray: Just a multipurpose skin irritation product. There's so many companies that make it these days.

14. A super bright colored phone case: I learned this from trial and error, Idk if I'm just getting old but I think half the reason I keep losing my phone (in my house and car) is because it it's a navy blue and often just blends into the darkness.

Ooo the MagSafe wallet is super interesting. I assume it doesn’t work if you have a case on?

One day I'll be the fancy lady I dream of and purchase beautiful clothing from sustainable brands, but for now it's mostly thrifted and shitty little amazon purchases, the favorites of which include:

- this mesh travel toiletries bag (saw it at bed, bath and beyond. have given up on cute and gone for the compartments and functionality! the hangability!) https://www.amazon.in/Miamica-3-Zip-Organizer-Travel-Pouch/dp/B076N7KP6Y?th=1

- The snail skincare. My skin is glowing! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PBX3L7K?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

- Thrifted shoes on poshmark: Vintage Reeboks, "Dexter" T-straps comfort shoes that also are similar to taylor swift in these but cheaper: https://www.instyle.com/taylor-swift-platform-mary-janes-shoe-trend-7555923

- Kos Lip fuel. Perfect amount of color for me- minimal, but present. Not drying.

- Harper Wilde Bliss Triangle Bralette in black. my giant knockers feel held, and look reasonably-sized and without a wire! have used this as a swim top in a pinch.

- These toothbrushes that have helped my gum health efforts and made my teeth whiter in the hard to reach areas: https://www.amazon.com/Plotkas-Mouthwatchers-Antimicrobial-Bristle-Toothbrush/dp/B00AFWPVUC

this subscription to maybe baby, and also a 6-month online pilates one: Range by Kara Duval. They both feel like nourishing, enriching spaces with thoughtful, intentional women running the show.

I have a 3 month old and didn’t want to buy the dreaded nursing tops or covers, I tried some hand me downs but they were inconvenient/ the shirts just didn’t feel like me. I got these v neck nursing tops from gap and have literally been wearing them daily since. I just use these as a tank and then wear wide cut semi-cropped crew necks over them. Just flip the shirt up and pop the needed boob out of the tank. They’re also cute tucked into high waisted pants and don’t look super obviously nursing-y. Was the best solution for me where I get to wear many of my existing shirts and feel more like myself style-wise.

Love some good recommendations! Comments section is on fire here haha! A couple others:

1. Birkenstock Boston mules - SO comfy and elevate pretty much any outfit

2. Mini sized totes umbrella - in London you need to be prepared for the rain at all times, this mini fits in all of my handbags even the teeny tiny impractical ones

3. Collapsible crates baskets - my bathroom has never looked so tidy and organised plus you can find so many cute colours on these baskets

4. Memory foam neck pillow - sleeping on long train journeys or flights will never be the same again

1. Anker USBC fast charger and cord, in lavender. Super cute, super fast charge, and on sale on Amazon right now.

2. Ozma Eugène cropped turtleneck sweater in caravelli (cream) alpaca. I got this during a crazy sale last august, promptly felt guilty bc it arrived and was 90F outside and I couldn’t imagine ever needing a sweater again, then wore it like 80% of this fall/winter/spring. It’s SO well made and barely shows wear. Meanwhile my j crew cashmere was losing tufts as I walked, literally the first time I wore it out of the house! 🫠

3. Rooibos Vanilla tea from The Captains Daughter in Provincetown. Their blends are truly special but this one is my fave year round, hot or iced. If you’re ever in P Town the shop is lovely and they have delicious iced tea drinks 🪄

4. Silk eye masks for sleep. Specifically the Lunya and Anya Hindmarch ones. They have that funny shape with the notch for your nose and I have never slept better. Also Hill House Home silk pillowcases. Had mine for 3-4 years now and still going strong.

5. Bachan’s BBQ sauce. I get the gluten free one. This stuff goes on everything and is SO good.

Request... does anyone have a favorite *nicer* every day handbag? (I’m mostly in nyc and SF if that helps with general aesthetic vibe) I had a Clare V striped canvas backpack with leather straps that I’ve worn into the ground and she no longer makes. The dark brown leather straps also bleed color if my armpits are sweaty, thus staining all my summer shirts 😵‍💫

I need something nicer than my baggu Fanny pack or random canvas tote, but not so delicate or small that it’s useless for every day. I am overwhelmed at the options. Would love a zip closure.

Lastly has anyone tried negative underwear in that whisper fabric? It looks so soft but it’s nottttt cheap. But I’m tired of how scrunchy/lumpy my pact underwear gets on my hips

I have a small leather tote from Cuyana that I carry a lot and really like, and this is not particularly stylish but I do find the classic nylon longchamp VERY useful! All black, no contrasting handles looks a little nicer IMP

Expand full comment

I’m intrigued by the all-black longchamp! All the functionality of a tote, but a zipper and a bit more sturdy. Plus the singular color doesn’t put me back into 2005 flashbacks. Also must check out cuyana! Thank you ☺️

I have the Negative bra in that fabric and it's SO SOFT. I've switched to all Negative bras despite the cost because then material feels so good on, and even without underwire they give some support. They're basically fancy sports bras (complimentary).

Omg I was debating getting a bra too 😅 SOLD!

Thanks for sharing Hunter Gather Parent - can't wait to read! I am a few weeks behind you in my first pregnancy - wondering if you have any other books you would recommend that have to do with pregnancy/what to do when the baby comes/parenting? I am at a loss for how to find books that aren't full of religious themes/old fashioned.

My year in favs ~

Black Super Birkis -- bought these for rainy summer days, and then fell in love with their comfort and ugly-cute look so I just wear them constantly, with everything: https://tinyurl.com/bd7tvzfb

Fruit Of The Loom "Ankle" (Crew?) Socks -- an impromptu walmart purchase with zero regrets, their cushiness is unmatched! https://tinyurl.com/2p9m7urn

Babaa No 17 -- x2, oops. I found one of these second-hand, and then wore almost nothing else for over a month. So, I hunted again and snagged another colour, and they are both on constant rotation in my wardrobe! Highly recommend searching Facebook (Babaa buy & sell, slow fashion buy & sell) or Instagram (#babaaforsale) for deals :))

Deiji Studios Linen Tops -- again, second-hand! Poshmark and Depop are great places to find Deiji items; I have 3 linen tops that have been go-tos all summer <3

Patio Lights, An Outdoor Rug, & Several 2x8s -- so my partner & I could build a bench and make our back patio a nice place to be. We've lived in our apartment for over a year and until recently, the patio has been 2 beach chairs and dead plants! I'm learning that optimizing your space can really add a level of lushness to daily routines :) Also: dedicating a Saturday to ~doing the dang thing~ often proves itself well worth the time investment.

Loving reading all these recs -- thanks Haley & everyone!

I would love to hear your thoughts on Kate Flannery’s book, “Strip Tees”. I grew-up in Los Angeles, and was 14 when I first walked into an American Apparel. Memories of my budding sexuality are cloaked in spandex leggings (worn in place of pants), neon bralettes, and silver lamé body suits. Their ads with barefaced girls made me feel sexy with my typical acne-ridden teenage skin. I was too naive to recognize the perverseness of it all. I just picked up a copy of the book, and again, if you’ve read it or plan to read it, would be so interested in hearing your critique of this time in fashion.

What is it about shopping lists that gets me so excited?? I should talk to my therapist about this. Some of my faves:

Roucha Pace Pants in navy - So comfortable and has pockets! I love their unique sizing, which makes most of their clothes adjustable which is perfect for my fluctuating body.

Gardening overalls from Duluth Trading. I have the long pants and shorts for summer. Every time I wear them, I discover new pockets and uses for them.

Kitsch satin pillowcases and heatless hair curler. The pillowcases really cut down on frizzy bed hair in the mornings. To add a little more texture and volume to my hair, I towel dry/blow dry my hair until it's damp, spray some WOW Dream Coat for Curly Hair (I actually have slightly wavy hair and this does an amazing job of bringing those natural waves out), then wrap around the flexible curler rod.

Collapsible hair diffuser. https://a.co/d/iZZPWv1. So easy to pack and handy since Dyson doesn't make a diffuser for the Airwrap.

The Original Bee's Wax Furniture Polish. This + Barkeeper's Friend + Mr. Clean Antibacterial concentrate make up the staples of my cleaning supplies. The bee's wax is more expensive than other cleaners, but it works on shiny surfaces, glass, countertops, etc. It has a great scent and doesn't leave a greasy residue like Pledge can.

This laptop stand from Amazon https://a.co/d/4iksTpu. Light and easy to carry to use on the go.

This correction tape that perfectly matches the creamy paper in Moleskine notebooks https://a.co/d/6qa9T7T.

This CC cream https://a.co/d/39v9WjR.

This fridge organizer set from OXO. https://a.co/d/23R9ENO. The soda can mat has significantly reduced the amount of space my soda habit takes up in the fridge.

This egg cooker that shuts off on its own. https://a.co/d/htvzD1c

The Fi Dog Collar. My dog is pretty good at callbacks, but sometimes the distractions in the north Georgia mountains are too great. This is the best wifi/GPS collar out of all the ones I've tried. It's not bulky and it's very well made with medal latches and clips instead of plastic.

I'm curious to see if anyone's on the hunt for something in particular. If so, please reach out because I love finding things that work well for others!

I will preach to anyone who will listen about Cadence Capsules. They’re an incredible well designed solution to travel-size containers but also so cute and so satisfying. For daily use I carry three in my purse: one with ibuprofen, one with a little hand cream or Lauren’s All Purpose salve, and one with flaky sea salt (lol).

this is so funny bc my friend cat is obsessed w these and I always make fun of her bc I think they seem so annoying to use!! clearly I'm wrong lol

I also love my cadence capsules, but they changed the design right after I bought them 🫠 so before my next trip I’ll need to decide if I need some of the additional sizes (likely) and some new labels...pricey but they are great so it feels worth it!

ANYWAY I love the idea of using one on the daily for flaky salt!!!! Genius

For iced coffee lovers, we bought something called the HyperChiller (lol). It turns scorching-hot fresh coffee into cold, undiluted coffee in seconds! Comfort Colors t shirts!! Cheap, basic, “unisex” cotton tees. They are ringspun cotton, I don’t know what that means but I like the texture better than a Hanes or similar. Smooth, soft (but not too soft like so many tees with too much polyester), cool-to-the-touch fabric, and garment dyed so they fade in a cool way.
