I’m so sorry, and rolling my eyes, that you have to deal with “Zohran is pro-Hamas” DMs! I assumed better from this community. Was so psyched to vote last week for the first time in so many years.

To be fair, I received those messages on Instagram!! Different beast…

We have to be willing to try and fail at new ways to be. We are a country so focused on technological innovation that we ignore the fact that we’ve starved ourselves of social innovation for decades. I don’t need all of Zohran’s policies to succeed (and frankly, what are we really losing if something like a state run grocery store doesn’t work out in the end?). I am just so eager to have someone with the vision and willingness to try. It’s the only way we’ll ever change and improve.

The request to knock off the “pro-Hamas” DMs in the postscript of an essay about systematic manipulation by a liberal media apparatus which, at this point, is just AIPAC’s public relations arm is just … 🤌🏼 Great piece. Crossing all my appendages that Zohran and his vast sea of legitimate democratic support for his eminently reasonable ideas can defeat that gutter rat in an Armani suit 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼

Thank you for this—I can’t wait to vote for Zohran on Tuesday. His campaign is the first I’ve ever phoned banked for (too nervous to canvas lol) & is also the only thing giving me hope at the moment. It’s so crazy to watch someone who, among so many other issues, literally does not live here buy this election… I despise Cuomo!!! Here’s hoping Zohran wins 👏

I live in Detroit, but have been watching this primary with excitement because of Zohran Mamdani and the race he is running. From the social media campaign videos where he explains his campaign goals and promises to his presence in the community, it has been so refreshing to finally have a progressive candidate whose campaign is so strong and powered by people vs capital. I truly hope this is the start of a new wave and i wish the democratic party could learn from this and embrace it versus shunning and discrediting.

I believe he can win!

Haley, this was perfect. I was thrilled to rank Mr. Zohran Mamdani #1 this week. Now I'm letting myself feel unabashed hope for the next two days. Thankfully, I feel like the messaging around ranked-choice voting is much clearer this time than in 2021, with Lander and Mamdani cross-endorsing each other and of course "don't rank Cuomo" being repeated everywhere.

I don't live in New York but I think even as a nation, we desperately need Mamdani to win as a beacon of hope for what's right and what could be. That, to your point, progressives aren't naive children but actually have expansive ideas that are not out of the realm of possibility. Not that it's what he signed up for, but Mamdani represents the potential of precedent in a very dark time.

This is excellent. I’m in Canada but following the race closely for exactly the reasons you outlined. There’s a real buoyant feeling accompanying his campaign and it gives me so much hope.

I'm having a Substack Live at 2 pm EDT today on the elections with volunteer organizer Sachi Takahashi-Rial and political journalist Ross Barkan.

This article captured the enthusiasm for Mamdani who was Ross Barkan's campaign manager when Ross ran for office in 2018.

Politically, what Mamdani has done is incredible. And I think he will be a political factor for many years.

it’s becoming clearer and clearer to me that American media understands they’re hanging on by a thread and are pulling out all the most pathetic stops they possibly can. the last week has been quite special in that regard. liberals — especially the 40+ crowd — need to get their heads around the idea that young people are drawn to leftism because the consensus American liberalism has never worked for one second of our lives. We have only lived through the fallout of its stagnation. Something MUST change swiftly, and I would rather we fail originally than in the same ways that have defined the last twenty years of liberal policy. will be watching NYC closely this week from across the globe 🙌🏻

Doesn't change your main point at all, but I believe Zohran has maxed out on primary contributions and therefore just legally can't accept more money--I think his campaign actually lobbied recently for the limit to be raised in response to Cuomo's PAC spending.

Thank you for writing this piece💗 Zohran represents a true catalyst for progressive change within the left, and this election is about so much more than the seat of mayor.

I no longer live there, but I’m praying NYC does the right thing. I was shocked by the results of the last mayoral election. The city I lived in felt unified and filled with soul. I know there is still extreme inequality and I felt that viscerally during my 10 years there. BUT! New York belongs to the people and the people deserve a mayor looking out for their best interest. It would be a real shame, and all too predictable, if Cuomo gets it.
