Today I woke up to the news that President Trump had tested positive for Covid-19, and truly, it felt like Christmas morning. I was still half-asleep in my pajamas when Avi told me, and then I experienced a jolt of what I can only describe as festive jubilance. I felt alive! Like I was 10 and there was a tankini under the tree!
Your description of biking around New York filled me with joy and made me miss it so much! That's how I got around the city every single day (except when it was legit snowing and consequently impossible to pedal without skidding) and it was magical.
Have you read Sidewalks by Valeria Luiselli? She has an incredible essay in there about cycling around Mexico City with I think would resonate with anyone who's discovered what being on a bike does to your relationship with a city. Could not recommend it more! And the other essays are also incredible.
I just came on here to suggest Sidewalks as well and posted before scrolling through the rest of the comments and seeing you made the same suggestion. Pleased to join the choir!
when she mentioned Katy Perry's TGIF like it was a lifetime ago lol
super curious what Gen Z's reputation is gonna be, so far it seems pretty favorable (scrappy, good at dancing) compared to "lazy snowflake millennials"
i also wonder how much it is related to millennials being mostly raised by boomers and Gen Z mostly raised by Gen X
Hello. I am here to suggest the essay collection Sidewalks by Valeria Luiselli, specifically the piece titled Manifesto à Vélo. Your reference to the way the world looks on a bike so closely echoed Luiselli's thoughts here, and I (not knowing you at all) think you would enjoy both this five page manifesto and the entire collection. I gobbled it up on one of the earliest greyest days of quar and have yet to stop thinking about it.
Recently subscribed, and so glad to have your thoughts back in my consumption feed. You always seem to articulate the snippets of thoughts I have into more eloquent, thought-out musings.
I know I'll now be looking at my world through the lens of McLuhan, so thank you.
reading this newsletter every sunday must be what listening to the resistance on the radio in a post apocalypse world feels like, cause that’s what this has been for me for the past few months
Your newsletter is the best thing about Sunday mornings. Ty, ty, ty
I felt all the feels you did when finding out #45 has covid. Yes, it's petty, but I enjoy reducing him to a number and not calling him by name. At first -- elation! I had a good night sleep (I'm on West Coast time so reveled in the news on twitter for a good hour and a half), woke up with a pep in my step, and then the reality of the situation sunk in. Unfortunately, the pandemic continues to exist! People are still racist af! I have good friends that have crossed over to the dark side.
The bleakness continues to permeate existence during this time. A momentary escape from the fact we're living through an extinction event. What to do?
How do any of us go through life without wanting to *disrupt* (ew, I hate that word now) everything about the human existence? Is it possible?
So many thoughts, such overwhelming feelings -- how do we deal with these times?
I just have this one (1) comment. This is the best newsletter.
🥺 thank you for this!!
this was such a cozy newsletter. and “my nemesis” really just gave me a good laugh at work rn

Please, please- let's bring CDs back. They can be the next vinyl. So retro.
Also buying them is so fun!
i kept hearing Emma Chamberlain referenced in TikTok and finally know who she is. It's always crazy "discovering" an extremely famous person.
Yes totally, I feel like that so often with gen z celebs!!

Thank you! Noted
Thank you for the birthday wish — I did need that! Pandemic birthdays are weird and somber.

Subscribing to this newsletter is the best $5 I spend each month. Thanks as always, Haley.
Thank YOU! Truly
Terry Tempest Williams is fantastic! And she’s a fellow Utahn (proud!). Her recent-ish book, The Hour of Land was one of the best things I’ve read. :)
