"Not a bad texture to go out on" I'M DEAD

Loved your energy! I found myself laughing out loud several times. Bug’s breathing was a plus, too. I relate so much to your trying to find a balance between self-discipline and recklessness but I must admit that whenever I indulge into some recklessness education and try to forget my fear of death, I feel more alive than ever! Even after a simple 3-hour flight. I almost cry when the plane lands and feel such a badass that I made it. Huge love from Greece <3

I still remember that MR article you wrote where you were hedonistic AF for a week and everyone was horrified cause hedonism was like "we went to the restaurant and shared a ball of vanilla ice cream!". And I'm like, yeah, if I was writing for MR or whatever, and I had to find what hedonistic or spontaneous or ill-advised stuff I did during an average week I'd be like... not that one... ooh definitely not that... oh fuck not that either... aha! I had one scoop of vanilla ice cream on Tuesday, gonna be that one!

Especially on those big women's media sites where half the comments on eg money diaries tend to be like "what do you mean, you careless child, you don't have 6 months' rent saved up and a retirement fund??! And you eat too much fried food! This gives me anxiety!!".

FWIW in college I was always the one trying to talk people into joining a band with me or going in the sea at 3am or just dragging people on walks along the cliffs until 7am. They'd be like "I can't sing or play an instrument" I'd be like "good! that's exactly what I'm looking for!". No takers though.

I love the idea of a band of people who don't play instruments

Well it's more a case of everyone being on an instrument where they're a total beginner, so coming to it with an attitude of "this is a tool that makes sounds, how do I get the best sounds out of it?" rather than a kind of rigid framework. Plus an ego thing: nobody gets to be a really good guitarist or whatever right off the bat.

I mean, bands like Can did that, they all met studying music under Stockhausen and they picked instruments that weren't the ones they were already expert at. Or Suicide who were basically one guy singing / losing his rag and another operating a retooled bowling-ball dispenser.

Actually with you talking about recklessness, probably the first thing I thought of, because it informed how I wanted to live my life and still kind of does, is underground music in the 70s and 80s, because they were often people from middle-class or even quite affluent backgrounds who had a comfortable life laid out for them and they just radically went NOPE and threw it all out, fuck picket fences and fuck Reagan, and built something else instead. If you've heard of a book called Our Band Could Be Your Life by Michael Azerrad, it's a fascinating read. It's probably the point where I rejected the question "but were they happy?" when thinking of these people's lives because, ultimately, you can be living in a van, hating each other, everyone's an asshole, and none of that matters if you did something that had an impact, that was worthwhile.
